BJORN TO BE CAPTAIN
Thomas Bjorn, 2018 European Ryder Cup Captain, shakes hands with The Shire London's Tony Menai-Davis to become Honorary Captain at the golf club for 2017-18. "This was a very proud moment for all involved with The Shire London. They have been clients and good friends of mine for over a decade now, and it was great to be able to help bring Thomas to the club in 2017, their 10th Anniversary year."
DREAMLAND 1: MEET THE MEMBERS
Colin Montgomerie OBE with a VIP on opening day at Dreamland GC in Azerbaijan. "From the moment he arrived, Colin was - as always - brilliant value. He's a pleasure to photograph, and always charms the people he meets. There's nobody better if you want a European Tour legend to represent you in front of the public."
Guess who won the golf day?
Fine dining at Little Aston Golf Club, in England's West Midlands. "Little Aston invited me to boost their off-course marketing imagery, so I spent far more time in the clubhouse than I did on their (very fine) golf course. The chef prepared a series of dishes, beautifully, and I tried to do them justice. This particular dish was rather artistically presented, and I thought it merited natural light rather than anything artificial. Taken by the clubhouse window, as is the case for a lot of my food photography."
BARNSLEY WORLD CHAMPIONS: 1
WKC World Champions Caitlan Williamson (left) and Lilian Baxter (right) demonstrate Team Kata at Modern Martial Arts in Barnsley, in summer 2017. "MMA is a small martial arts dojo in Athersley, Barnsley, which in 2016 remarkably produced these two world champions. In 2017, the club faced a funding challenge - £6,000 was needed to fund a trip to the World Championships for both Caitlan and Lilian to go for more world titles, plus another five students who had all qualified to represent Team England in the world champs. It's an inspirational place. I offered to take press photos for them, so the media would take notice."
BARNSLEY WORLD CHAMPIONS: 2
WKC World Champions Caitlan Williamson (left) and Lilian Baxter (right) show their Gold Medals at Modern Martial Arts in Barnsley, in summer 2017. "It was changeover time between classes at MMA, and I had to take this shot in Reception while kids, mums and dads were flying in and out of the dojo. I was seriously in the way. Six year olds don't stop for anyone."
Sheffield Giants Ball Carry
Sheffield Giants #8 Sam Fossey gains valuable yards vs the Lancashire Wolverines in the BAFANL Premier League, June 2017. "Looks like I was standing right there on the field .. that's the beauty of a good lens."
The sumptuous interior of the iPlayGolfUK indoor golf centre, near Milton Keynes, UK. "Neil Wilcox and his team have created quite simply a paradise for golfers at IPGUK. I got there early one morning, the place was immaculate, and I love the way the sofas match the lights and the wall covering at the far end. We experimented with different lighting to get this shot - it's set up like a nightclub, and has a banging sound system too."

IT'S A SIGN

THE GOLD MEDAL
For winners only.
An artistic dish before a wedding. "Photographing food is always a challenge - it's a task which has hidden complexity. The chef prepared this dish especially for the photoshoot... the wedding wasn't due to start for several hours."
THE FOOTGOLF PHOTO
FootGolf at Addington Court Golf Club, in South London. "This photo has been used widely around the world, to illustrate FootGolf - always without permission. I am steadily hunting down the people who have been mis-using it. All part of the fun of being a photographer!"
Uncle Sam's Ryder Cup Promotion
Golfers and staff join 'Uncle Sam' for a Ryder Cup promotion at Playgolf Northwick Park in north west London. "One of my favourite-ever press photos - this shot took days to organise. The Uncle Sam outfit and all the flags took a bit of getting. The baby girl at front right is my daughter, Holly. I forget who played Uncle Sam but he was game for anything."
Step class on a Saturday morning.
The VIP Room at iPlayGolf Milton Keynes. "Neil and his team had created more or less the ideal indoor golf VIP room, complete with its own bar and flat screen TV. The perfect setup for a few hours on the golf course - indoors!"
IT'S A GIRL THING
Greenkeepers Bob Wallis (right) and Steve Hollingsworth before their charity marathon golf event at Milford GC, Surrey. "As is often the case there was a poignant story behind what is a fun photo to create publicity. One of Bob's oldest friends was battling cancer, and he wanted to do something to raise funds. Sadly, she died before the event, which made it even more heartfelt. People like these two make Britain great."
OPEN FOR BUSINESS
A meeting room at Thornbury GC, near Bristol, England. "You wouldn't believe how long it takes to photograph a static room, sometimes. Even when you've got the inside scene looking right, you have the outside to consider. For this shot I had to clear about a dozen golf bags and trolleys from the tarmac outside, and waited until nobody was walking about before I clicked the shutter. I ad the guys from the pro shop doing a bit of crowd control for me ....."

'Sir' Les Ferdinand opens the West London Golf Centre. In the watching crowd, superstar DJ Trevor Nelson (far left) awaits his turn.
Chip the Bear with a fan at Redbourn Golf Club. "The chap in Chip was the assistant PGA Pro, and I took him all over the golf course with me. I photographed that boss-eyed bear in bushes, hiding in grass, reclining on greens, doing star jumps the air ... by the end he'd worked up a bit of a sweat."
Delegates at Honma's 2015 Global Partners Meeting wave to the camera, at Honma's enormous and immaculate club testing facility. "I was lucky enough to be asked to attend the 2015 event in Japan, and it was a memorable few days. Everything about the Honma clubmaking process is astonishing, and their facility in northern Japan is full of surprises. I have some good friends from years in business in this photograph, which was taken on the last day of the visit. Honma looked after us all extremely well. Truly a week to remember."

Artistic intent, at one of the weekly classes at Roehampton Club.
Two young visitors approach the clubhouse at The Shropshire GC. "This one features my typical slant ... I seem to tip the camera without realising it, when taking these brochure-style photos. For me, it works well though. We all have our own style."

Bar food tempts the photographer, at Cranleigh G&CC. "Nuggets, chips and tomato sauce ... the schoolboy in me was tempted to simply eat it, and forget photography. But I overcame the hunger pangs, and painstakingly arranged the food. By the time I'd finished, it had all gone cold anyway."
DREAMLAND 2: FLAME TOWERS SUNRISE
Colin Montgomerie faces the sunrise over the Caspian Sea, with the Flame Towers, Baku, in the background. "A key shot for the Dreamland launch publicity. Tons of thought went into this photo, taken just as the sun rose over the bay. We wanted to get the big hotel towers, and the traditional minarets, plus of course Monty, into the shot at just the right moment. It was a slightly cloudy dawn, and Monty had to get away to the golf club where the President of Azerbaijan was due to arrive, so the pressure was on. IMG were of course vital to staging this shot."
DREAMLAND 3: MONTY OPENS THE ACADEMY
Colin Montgomerie nails a drive in front of the juniors at the Dreamland GC Academy in Azerbaijan.
DREAMLAND 4: PRESIDENT OF AZERBAIJAN
President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and Colin Montgomerie OBE perform the opening ceremony at Dreamland Golf Club, Baku."Such a significant event for Dreamland, and with the added pressure of having the President there, there was no room for mistakes. Luckily everyone did a splendid job and I got the photos we needed. Earlier that morning, while photographing the President's arrival, I became aware of the presence of his armed bodyguards close by, so I was on very good behaviour."
DREAMLAND 5: OPENING TEE SHOT
Colin Montgomerie fires the opening tee shot down the fairway at Dreamland Golf Club, Azerbaijan. "Needless to say, with the President and all the VIPs looking on, this was a shot which neither Colin nor I wanted to get wrong. Standing next to the President is the Chairman and owner of Dreamland - the all-important client."

Tour de Yorkshire 2015
The early leader in the Tour de Yorkshire powers up the hill towards Barnsley. Early May 2015. "I got rather close to the peloton but that's part of the thrill, and I'm pretty nimble".
READY FOR BATTLE
A commanding-looking conference setup. "Conferences and meetings are a big revenue stream for many golf clubs, and most club shoots I do involve spending time photographing rooms like this."
Part of the large gym at Branston G&CC. "I came back for a reshoot at Branston, as agreed with the marketing team, to get some more lifestyle-type shots. This was one of them, and it now plays a prominent role on their new website."
A sunny morning on the patio at Redbourn Golf Club, a BGL venue near Harpenden, England. "This was a fairly late-season shoot, and the light was quite harsh. However, this scene presented itself beautifully. I had to do a bit of arrangement on the table - I went into the bar, where they were just getting started for the day, and borrowed various things to make this scene. There's no golf club patio photograph that a bottle of Heinz tomato sauce can't improve ... "
THE BUSINESS VENUE
A meeting underway at Birchwood Park Golf Club, near Dartford in Kent, UK. "How I wish I'd re-filled that glass with the red liquid ... one of my 'models' was obviously thirsty! But as always, you're on a deadline and in other respects I think this is a decent corporate image."
Luxury at Burhill
One of the sumptuous rooms in the clubhouse at Burhill Golf Club near London. "Not your average golf club dining room. People who don't know the sport think that the inside of every golf club looks like this, but in reality very few do."
A touch of colour in a golf club waiting area. "I like the splash of colour in the middle of the slightly austere greys and browns here. And look, I've tilted the camera again. A lot of my photos look like they were taken during an earthquake...."
EXCLUSIF GOLF UK LAUNCH
Exclusif Golf custom-fitter Mathieu Humel adjusts a Honma iron on a demo day at the Stoke Park club. "This image looks quite natural, but Mathieu kept laughing saying "But I would never hold it this way...!" I held firm and got the shot I wanted."
Resplendent in their kit, four FootGolfers pose at The Shropshire GC. "Their personality comes through in this photo - these lads had just finished a game of FootGolf on a very hot day. God knows how hot his head was under that turban ..."
The quarterback goes on a run for the Sheffield Predators american football team. "I love most forms of sport, so it was a pleasure to photograph something other than golf on this particular Sunday afternoon. American football gives you lots of high-impact photo opportunities, but you have to be careful not to stray onto the pitch - those guys don't take prisoners."
A blazing sunset at Surrey Downs GC near London. "A very long day of shooting, but the sunset was irresistible. The sky was on fire that evening."
Sparks fly from an angle grinder. "Taken to help a Scandinavian company illustrate the concept of naturally-produced heat. This was actually my Grandad Ralph in his garage. He's no longer with us, but I always think of him when I see this."
Ready for the next meeting, at Surrey Downs GC near London. "Clean and simple, and the sort of image which says 'business' at a glance."
The unstoppable Tony Menai-Davis, creator of The Shire London and West London Golf Centre, poses on a digger at his next project - the West London Links. "Tony is an elemental force, and it has been my honour to work for him and his family for ten years now. Through him, I met Seve Ballesteros, designer of The Shire London. On the day of this photo, Tony and his son Ceri walked me around their new golf course at West London Links, which will be another spectacular addition to golf around north London."
Ready For Dinner
A beautifully-prepared dinner table at Batchworth Park GC, Rickmansworth, England. "The end of a golf day, and some gorgeous evening sunlight illuminated the dining room, while the golfers enjoyed their pre-dinner drinks on the patio. Such a pleasant evening to be holding a camera."
A room at the golfer's lodge accommodation at Thornbury Golf Club, near Bristol. "For the photographers out there, I took this shot using the High Dynamic Range technique. Three exposures blended together afterwards using Photomatix software. You get a distinctive look where shadows and highlights are both optimised, and it looks slightly surreal, and a little painterly."
DON'T LOOK NOW
Golfers avoid the camera in the bar at The Shropshire. "There's almost always someone looking at you when you're trying to photograph people in a golf club bar. There's a couple here, but they're fairly distant. This photo is made by the guy in the white polo, in the foreground - it's a nice, natural smile."
A fitness trainer works his pupils. "One very fit middle-aged guy, and around fifteen determined women. You feel a little creepy crawling around a gym taking photos. People are very concerned about their bottoms."
A technician attempts to prevent the media from photographing a secret part of the Honma factory. "Naturally, everyone took a photo of this guy. He was laughing behind the sign."
A hideous attack by a giant snake, at Ramsdale Park GC near Nottingham. "It's always a lot of fun photographing adventure golf. It helps if you get a willing group of lads. People are surprisingly shy, normally, but if you hang around long enough they forget you, and lose their self-consciousness."
A speaker's quip gets a good reaction from a large charity dinner. "This was a very emotional evening - a group of friends coming together to honour one of their own, who had battled cancer. There was a tremendous goodwill in the room, and a generosity of spirit which was very humbling."
A first tee scene at Abbey Hill GC, near Milton Keynes. "Long lens, blurry background, slightly titled, flag out of focus in the background, deep colours ... this is pretty much my signature look."
A well-furnitured corner of the bar at Branston Golf & Country Club. "This attractive fireplace is a feature of the large, luscious bar at Branston."

Photography for marketing materials at The Shire London, the UK's only full Seve Ballesteros design.
Weight training equipment in a golf club gym. "I like to find small corners of darkness when taking close ups."
Showing off their moves on the FootGolf course at The Shropshire. "Somewhere along the line, the ability to showboat has become more important than the ability to hit a straight pass ... these lads were game for a laugh, but no Ronaldos."
The handsome clubhouse flag at Burhill Golf Club. "Burhill is an impressive golf club. It has more or less everything you could want, and the scale - even the size of this flag - is big. To get this shot I was hanging off a balcony with a very wide angle lens. I felt I needed to get the putting green and wee starters hut in the background into the photo."

READY FOR THE PARTY

MAKING A POINT
A meeting gets underway, at Abbey Hill GC near Milton Keynes in England. "This was a regular Friday morning networking club, chaired by the gent in the floral shirt on the left hand side. They kindly let me creep around and snap away, trying to be invisible as always."
A touchdown for the Doncaster Mustangs against the Sheffield Predators.
A traditional hotel room near Sakata, Japan, close to the Honma Golf production studio. "Honma treated us to a traditional Japanese ceremonial meal before the two-day Tour, and our hotel was extremely formal. Not exactly a Travelodge. No bed. And we all had to wear traditional Japanese robes to dinner. A strange night... "
The calm waters of an indoor pool at the country club. "Ever photographed a swimming pool? You've got to kick everyone out half an hour beforehand, so the water stops moving. I was not popular that morning."
BIRCHWOOD PARK PRO SHOP
A touch of class at Birchwood Park GC. "I enjoy finding artistic angles in the pro shop. I liked the way the light from the door fell on this Oscar Jacobson sign, and the colours are great."
